Nightingale Cottage was once a disused tractor shed. The client wanted to turn the site into a fully functioning home that balanced natural materials with durable, modern design. We handled the project from demolition through to the final finish, delivering a bespoke new-build with basement living, a high-performance timber frame, and contemporary outdoor features.
Creating the Basement Structure
Our team began by demolishing the original shed and preparing the site for groundwork. We constructed a full concrete basement, adding valuable underground space. The basement added flexibility to the layout and improved the overall footprint without increasing the building’s scale above ground.
Building the Timber Frame and Zinc Roof
Once the basement was complete, we moved onto the main structure. The ground floor was built using a combination of glulam beams and structural timber. This method gave the building a clean, open feel while ensuring structural strength. A zinc roof was installed to complement the design and provide a durable, low-maintenance covering that will last for decades.
Finishing Touches: Windows and Decking
We installed timber-framed sliding windows throughout to maintain a consistent, natural look. These also allowed for excellent light and ventilation. Outside, millboard decking was laid over aluminium rails. This system offered the warmth of timber with none of the long-term upkeep, creating a smart, practical finish to the exterior.
